Bristol Bay Fly Fishing + Guide Academy
August 9-13, 2010
in Ekwok at the old village site of Akuluriqaalleq on the Nushagak River
Most people who visit Bristol Bay want to fish. And most of them want to fish with a local, home-grown guide who knows the waters, the wildlife, the people and the way of life here. That’s why we’re training the region’s young people to explore careers as guides – so they might stay in the region, earn a prosperous living, advocate for the health of the watershed and offer visitors an authentic experience of one
of our country’s most special natural places.
The Academy
Lead Instructor
Fly fisherman and naturalist, Dan Plummer, will serve as lead instructor for the 2010 Academy! He comes highly recommended and has ties to folks in Bristol Bay. As a little kid, he learned to fish, hunt and trap from his parents who were great outdoors enthusiasts and true naturalists. They put a very high value on all things wild and taught Dan and his brother John to appreciate all the outdoors had to offer. Dan now has a cabin on the Delaware River and engages in conservation work to ensure rivers get the chance they deserve to live up to their full potential. Dan serves as chairman of the Friends of the Upper Delaware River and lives in New York. His brother John will join him in Ekwok to instruct the 2010 Academy!
Volunteer Photojournalist
Photographer Nick Hall will visit Ekwok to document all the fishing, learning and friendship happening during the Academy on the Nushagak this summer. He's in Bristol Bay collecting images and stories for his documentary photo project: Seasons of Subsistence. His project that explores the unique subsistence culture of Bristol Bay Native People in Alaska. THANK YOU, Nick Hall!

2008 Academy
In 2008, twelve young people, almost all from the Bristol Bay region, learned how to fly fish and guide on the Nushagak River during the rigorous four-day Ekwok Fly Fishing and Guide Academy Aug. 3-7. Seven young women and five young men from Aleknagik, Manokotak, Togiak, New Stuyahok, Portage Creek, Ekwok, Anchorage and Gakona, gained hands-on instruction from guide Nanci Morris Lyon and others. This first-ever academy, was part of a regional initiative to boost sustainable, local economic development in Bristol Bay and provide visitors with an authentic, local experience. Tranining included safety, first aid and CPR training, fly-tying and knot-tying workshops, Bristol Bay history lessons, tips on incorporating traditional knowledge into a guiding service, as well as client-guide role playing and many hours of fly fishing instruction on the waters of the Nushagak River.
