Bristol Bay Fly Fishing + Guide Academy 2011
May 29 to June 5 2011 at Alaska Sportsmen's Bear Trail Lodge
on the banks of the Naknek River near King Salmon
Most people who visit Bristol Bay want to fish. And most of them want to fish with a local, home-grown guide who knows the waters, the wildlife, the people and the way of life here. That’s why we’re training the region’s young people to explore careers as guides – so they might stay in the region, earn a prosperous living, advocate for the health of the watershed and offer visitors an authentic experience of one
of our country’s most special natural places.

The Academy
Instructors
Nanci Morris Lyon
Nanci is back again for her second year at the academy! She's been fly-fishing and sport guiding in the Bristol Bay area since 1986 and in the Kenai Homer area for a few years before that. Her passion for fishing secluded streams and the Naknek and Nushagak rivers as a professional guide is paired with her passion for caring for the waters she loves and the people who depend on them. She speaks to students, offers seminars and gives fly-tying and casting demonstrations nationwide. Nanci founded and owns Katmai Fishing Adventures in King Salmon, is on the G. Loomis professional fishing team and has been featured in major, national fishing magazines and television shows. She’s also a pilot and holds numerous saltwater fly-fishing world records.
Dan Plummer
Fly fisherman and naturalist, Dan Plummer, is back again to instruct the 2011 Academy! As a little kid, Dan learned to fish, hunt and trap from his parents who were great outdoors enthusiasts and true naturalists. They put a very high value on all things wild and taught Dan to appreciate all the outdoors had to offer. Dan now has a cabin on the Delaware River on the East Coast and engages in conservation work to ensure rivers get the chance they deserve to live up to their full potential. Dan serves as chairman of the Friends of the Upper Delaware River and lives in New York. He had so much fun instructing the 2010 academy, that he came all the way back!
Luki Akelkok
Luki Akelkok, a Native Alaskan and lifelong resident of Bristol Bay, owns and operates a lodging, guiding, hunting, fishing and chartering business from Ekwok on the Nushagak River. Having lived in the region his entire life, Luki is a Nushagak and Mulchatna River expert, and a strong leader in the wider Bristol Bay community. He serves as president of the Ekwok Tribal Council and strong advocate for respecting the watershed and wildlife habitat. Luki will share his insights about the human history and culture of the area and also his many years of experience incorporating those insights into his own fishing and guiding service.
