Nushagak's Koliganek Lodge

Come to Southwest Alaska and experience rural village life in our community of Koliganek. With your local hosts Bobby and Margaret Larson, you can enjoy guided trips of the surrounding area and abundant opportunities to photograph wild game and the beauty of Alaska.

Koliganek is located some 200 miles southwest of Anchorage, as the birds fly anyways. You can get here by plane, motorboat, or in the winter by snowmachine (it used to be by dogsled, but times have changed). A plane from Anchorage to Koliganek will either bring you through Dillingham, or you can take a straight flight to Koliganek Airport, which can accommodate most twin engine planes. Taking a motorboat from Dillingham is approximately a four-hour run with minimum stops, but can be a beautiful way to see three different communities. If floating the river is moreyour style, we can also pick you up from either the Nuyakuk River or the Main River. In the winter, you can also come by sno-go (snow machine) from either Koliganek or Dillingham.

Located on the left bank of the Nushagak River, Nushagak's Koliganek Lodge is a locally-owned lodge that offers great hospitality. Once here you'll enjoy our friendly hospitality and home-cooked meals. For outings, we will either send you out with a sack lunch or a beach munyak, which is a word you’ll soon learn out here in rural Alaska.

Your accommodations will be a fully furnished,three-bedroom house with all the comforts of home. It includes a hot shower, kitchen, cable, a phone which can be used if needed, and a maqui'i (steam bath) for cleaning (if you've never tried washing in this fashion, you’re sure to enjoy it).

What To Do:

There are many activities here to suit everyone:

  • We invite you to explore the village and see subsistence activities such as putting up salmon. The salmon are bountiful in their season and it’s quite a chore to accomplish the end product, but what a great-tasting fish when done properly!
  • Go hiking and discover all the edible wild food and berries, not to mention the beautiful scenery.
  • Go out on a skiff to check out formerly inhabited sites from long ago; you can see how people in the area lived in Kusgis and mud houses.
  • See or paddle the rapids on the Nuyakuk in the Wood River Park System or go up the Main River – you may even see Caribou crossing!
  • Visit neighboring Bristol Bay communities to check out their part of the country and the many activities they have to offer.

Please call or email us for rates and availability. We look forward to hearing from you!
